Nathan Mulvey retired as Fire Chief of Fern Creek Fire & EMS in Louisville, KY after 32 years of service, beginning as a volunteer in 1993 and rising through every rank.   

Under his leadership, the department grew from 30 to over 250 personnel, launched an ALS ambulance service, and merged in three other districts to serve 150,000 residents across 86 square miles , becoming the 4th largest district in KY.    Nathan has been a Nationally Certified EMT since 2000 and respected fire service educator, holding several major leadership roles including President of the Kentucky Association of Fire Chiefs, Board Member of the Kentucky State Fire Commission, 2nd Vice President of the Southeastern Association of Fire Chiefs, and President of the Jefferson County Fire Chiefs Association.   

Nathan was also named Kentucky’s Fire Chief of the Year in 2020 and recipient of both the SEAFC Presidents Award for Leadership (2025) and the City of Louisville’s Medal of Honor for heroic rescue efforts in 2017 during one of the city’s largest multifamily residential fires.   

Nathan continues to advocate for public safety at the legislative level through the State Chiefs Association as well as in Washington with other Fire Service Leaders. In 2026, Nathan became Vice President of Risk Management at Sterling Thompson Company, carrying forward his commitment to service, leadership, and community—grounded in faith, family, and the love he shares with his wife Stephanie.
